Functional safety

The foundation of reliable performance

In modern operations, safety is more than a regulatory requirement, it's a vital promise to operators, partners, and end users. As a pioneer in remote control technology, we offer remote solutions that adhere strictly to internationally recognized standards ISO 13849 and IEC 61508. By leveraging our advanced functional safety architecture, you can address compliance demands confidently.

Why functional safety matters

Industrial machinery continues to grow in complexity, with increased automation and power. In these high-stakes environments, functional safety ensures systems respond predictably and reliably, even when things don’t go as planned. By implementing remote control solutions that comply with stringent international standards (ISO 13849-1 for PL, IEC 61508 for SIL), you’re preparing your equipment to operate safely and minimize risk across diverse applications.

Regulatory Compliance helps you meet standards and safety levels like PL d, PL e, or SIL 3, simplifying global market access and reassuring both operators and inspectors. Meanwhile, operator confidence increases when safety protocols are reliable and transparent, allowing workers to focus on the task at hand rather than potential system failures.

Understanding safety levels

Two frameworks govern functional safety

Performance level image functional safety

Performance Level (PL) by ISO 13849

Ranging from PL a (lowest) to PL e (highest), this classification governs safety-related machine control parts under ISO 13849-1. It covers both function and design, applying to electric, hydraulic, pneumatic, and programmable systems. Many OEMs find PL d sufficient for daily operations, but certain high-risk tasks may call for PL e. Most Scanreco transmitters and receivers hold at least PL d classification.

SIL image functional safety

Safety Integrity Level (SIL) by IEC 61508

Running from SIL 1 (lowest) to SIL 4 (highest), SIL relates to the functional safety of electronic systems under IEC 61508. While it doesn’t prescribe specific design rules, it emphasizes life-cycle considerations and safety functions. For advanced or mission-critical equipment—such as autonomous agricultural machinery—our Micro and Mini Flex models, meeting SIL 3, can offer the rigorous protection needed. Our SIL-compliant solutions meet the requirements of these standards, providing a structured approach to achieving the required safety levels, enabling a strong link in the equipment architecture.

Scanreco SISP 4x3

SISP™ - Elevating safety with modular architecture

One of the reasons we stand apart in functional safety is our Scanreco Integrated Safety Platform (SISP™), a modular safety solution available on the transmitters in the Flex series and the G6 receiver. SISP™ introduces an extra layer of protection by using independent hardware and software, effectively isolating critical safety checks from core firmware updates. This modular design means you can update or customize functions and firmware without re-certifying the entire system—saving time, reducing costs, and maintaining rigorous safety oversight.

  • Independent safety checks
By using dedicated safety processors parallel to the main processor, SISP™ continuously monitors critical functions and fault conditions
  • Seamless upgrades
Introduce new features or tweak operational code without overhauling proven safety components.
  • 3rd party approved
    Rigorous third-party assessments confirm SISP™ m
eets global safety standards ISO 13849 (PL e) or IEC 61508 (SIL 3).

Functional safety made accessible

Whether you’re upgrading existing equipment or designing new machinery, functional safety is a top priority. Under harmonized standards and legally binding directives, each machine builder is required to perform a thorough risk assessment, determining the safety level needed for each machine and function. At Scanreco, we help you navigate these obligations. Our deep experience in remote control technology, combined with a systematic approach to functional safety, ensures you can build solutions that meet regulatory demands. By working side by side with you, we integrate advanced safety mechanisms so your machines earn trust, remain compliant, and operate at the level of safety they’re designed for every day.
