Scanreco works closely with customers to create fully customized and functional systems. Continental Biomass Industries (CBI), a business unit within the Terex Corporation, designs and manufacturers horizontal grinders, industrial wood chippers, flail debarkers, screens, stacking conveyors, stationary systems, and attachments that incorporate advanced technology in engines, rotors, hydraulics, and telemetry.
Continental Biomass Industries’ line of equipment is highly customized to meet the specific needs of customers, ranging from sawmills to biomass energy plants. Therefore, CBI requires a highly customized remote-control platform that can meet their specifications and be operator friendly. In short, the rugged, intuitive, highly customizable, and easily deployable Rocket Flex platform checked all the boxes at CBI, including low cost of acquisition and maintenance, safety and profitability.
The challenge
CBI’s 6800CT and 6400CT Horizontal Grinders are the most technologically advanced and powerful on the market, with the capability to grind demolition debris, railroad ties, whole trees, pallets, storm debris, shingles, logs, mulch, slash, and stumps. Each grinder is engineered to meet unique customer specs and requirements for system feedback and control.
As such, the handheld remote-control transmitter used by operators requires specific labeling, buttons, icons, and branding for precise use. Furthermore, these massive and complex machines require system feedback like Engine RPM and Bearing Temperature for safe and effective operation.
As CBI’s reliable machinery can last decades in the field, they require a remote-control platform that can be easily retrofitted into existing field equipment with minimal downtime for its end users.
The solution
Working together, Scanreco and CBI chose the Scanreco Rocket platform. The Rocket platform offers a fully customizable label, LCD screen, and firmware.

CBI and Scanreco engineers worked closely to develop custom firmware to handle system feedback via Scanreco’s G3 CAN Receiver. In addition to its ability to receive and transmit CAN messages via 2.4 GHz radio frequency, the rugged and reliable receiver also withstands the vibrations and harsh environments of a typical deployment. Furthermore, anywhere a master controller is already present, the G3 CAN receiver can be added to the existing machine controls. |
Requirements and solutions
Requirement |
Solution |
Customized Label and Operator Interface |
With its ample, yet ergonomic design, the handheld Rocket transmitter label can be customized by combining symbols, text, and branding logos. CBI’s current label options are up to eleven different designs. |
Drop-In Technology for Existing Field Equipment |
The Rocket and G3 CAN are designed to be nearly plug-and-play and can be retrofitted into any machine with a pre-existing master controller. Additionally, CBI saves significant time and resources on system installs, with a typical install completed in around 5 minutes. |
Custom Firmware |
CBI and Scanreco engineers created and tested completely customized firmware to integrate with its various product lines. CBI can quickly upload and program the units prior to shipment based on customer specs. |
Robust System Feedback |
CBI requires robust system feedback via the Rocket's programmable LCD Screen. The need for signal strength, battery strength, engine RPM, and bearing temperature results in a graphics-heavy, but still readable user interface in a handheld platform. |
Rugged and Reliable Hardware |
CBI demanded functionality with maximum performance in wet, humid, hot, cold and high-debris operational environments. With an operational temperature range of -25°C to +55°C / ~ -15°F to + 130°F and an ingresses protection rating of IP65, the Rocket with e-stop and G3 CAN system is Scandinavian-designed to perform in harsh and hostile environments. |
Customized and functional systems
Engineered to minimize downtime, maximize production, and boost ROI, these biomass recovery machines process high volumes of wood waste into valuable end products (such as biomass, mulch, and compost).
CBI’s technology advancements have optimized material processing so that recovering and recycling biomass is both profitable and environ-mentally responsible. CBI’s innovations in material processing enable profitability and cost-savings in the recovery and recycling of biomass.
