Automation is reshaping the operator’s role rather than replacing it. At iVT Expo, industry experts, including part Scanreco: CrossControl's Fredrik Wahlström, shared perspectives on how increasing automation is changing machine interaction, and why HMI design is becoming central to supporting operators in more supervisory, decision-driven roles.

Automation in off-highway machinery is often discussed in terms of increasing machine capability. However, a key shift is taking place in parallel: the evolving role of the operator.

As machines become more automated, operators are not being removed from the process. Instead, their role is changing; moving from continuous hands-on control toward supervision, decision-making and timely intervention. This shift places greater emphasis on how machines communicate with operators, and how information is presented and understood in real time.

Clear, structured and relevant feedback has become central to effective operation. Human-machine interfaces (HMI), whether integrated onboard or delivered through remote control systems, play a critical role in supporting situational awareness and enabling operators to act with confidence when it matters most.

These developments were highlighted at the recent iVT Expo, where Fredrik Wahlström joined an industry panel, led by iVT International Editor Tom Stone, discussing the road ahead for off-highway autonomy. The conversation focused on automation, what is shaping machine design, and what it means for the operator experience going forward.

As automation continues to develop, the importance of the operator remains clear. The focus is shifting toward enabling better interaction - where well-designed interfaces support both performance and usability in everyday operation.

At the same event, CrossControl - part of Scanreco after an acquisition earlier this year, exhibited its latest technologies in onboard computing and display solutions. The booth showcased how integrated HMI systems can support operators with real-time data, intuitive interfaces and improved interaction between human and machine.

This video from the exhibition floor provides a closer look at the CrossControl booth and its product offering, highlighting how display and computing solutions are designed to meet the demands of increasingly advanced machinery.
